    Job Description

    The Yard Manager will have full responsibility for the yard and the horses, ensuring that our young people have an inspiring and enjoyable experience in a safe environment.  They will ensure the yard and stables are well maintained and the care of the horses is to the highest standards.  This role also includes the bulk of our instructing, both mounted and unmounted and responsibility for other instructors. We are looking for a candidate ideally qualified to BHSAI with two years experience in a commercial yard environment.  The ability to work with young people is preferred however professional training will be given to the right candidate. The Yard Manager will be fully supported by and reporting to The Engagement Manager.

    Job Requirements

    Ensure the horses receive the highest standards of care, managing their workload and welfare to ensure they remain fit for their work.
    Organise all aspects of daily and other regular care of horses and ponies, including making sure horses are ready for lessons.
    • Having an up to date individual planned schooling programme for each horse.
    • Schooling  horses both under saddle and on the lunge rein.
    • Plan horses workload
    • Have a suitable feeding programme for each horse
    • Keep written veterinary records for all horses calling and dealing with the Vet if necessary and liaising with the farrier.
    • Liaising with suppliers and maintaining cost effective solutions for feed. hay, bedding etc
    • Maintaining tack and horse wear.
    • Clipping
    • Support the Engagement  Manager in sourcing new horses for the Club and arrange holidays and transport as needed
    Ensure the standard of the yard is kept high at all times so as to reflect well on the work we do and provide an appealing place for the young people, staff and volunteers
    • Daily mucking out and bedding down.
    • Oversee general maintenance of the yard including muck heap, arena, tack room, storage room, feed room, class room and any other storage area’s
    • Ensure Equipment is safely stored and maintained and that it is kept clean and in good repair carrying out regular tack inspections
    • Organise regular harrowing of arena and turnout area to ensure a safe surface to work on.
    To manage volunteers on a daily basis, making sure we have sufficient cover and that the volunteers are developed as appropriate to give them maximum satisfaction from their time with us
    • Develop the team work of volunteers and riders to ensure standards on the yard are kept to a high level.
    • Ensure volunteer training is kept up to date and recorded.

    To work with our young people in a professional and engaging manner at all times ensuring they get the best possible benefit from being with us.
    • Teach both riding lessons and stable management when necessary to achieve the highest standards in all aspects of their training.
    • Teach a range of abilities from beginner to advanced, including schools, special school groups, individuals and people with disabilities.
    • Set up and maintain a system of rider progress on a regular basis.
    • Develop, oversee and run training of apprentice’s staff and volunteers to NVQ level 2 and BHS stage 1.
    • To assist the Engagement Manager in building up a programme of commercial lessons for external clients
    Responsibility for Instructor and standards of instruction including line managing instructor.
    Insure a high standard of teaching.

    Having regular appraisals and supervision with instructors and yard staff where appropriate.
    Maintain the highest levels of Health and Safety at all times
    • To follow all EHC H & S requirements at all times
    • To report any Health and Safety concerns to the Operations Manager as soon as possible 
    • To ensure that your actions do not endanger yourself or any other user of the EHC site. 
    • Ensure that accident report forms are completed in the event of an accident and filed away
    To perform any other tasks as requested by the Engagement Manager including acting as an ambassador when sponsors and potential supporters visit
    • Cover other members of staff when necessary
    • Deliver our commitments for the charities engagement programme
    • Attend regular team meetings and any other meetings as necessary and fully participate in any discussions.
    • Work with the Engagement Manager to gain BHS approval.
    • Be responsible for the application to licensing bodies, e.g. the local council and BHS
    • To assist in planning trips and visits and to attend trips and visits when necessary.
    • To work cooperatively with the Sports Activator
    Assist the Engagement manager and fundraiser in any monitoring activities to support fundraising
